The local-first production studio for print & digital publishing.

FontPanel is a desktop-class layout app for Chrome and Edge on larger screens.
It runs in your browser, keeps documents local by default, and is built for real print work: PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b export paths, CMYK, profile-aware preflight, editable PDF import, font management and e-magazine publishing.

Finished PDFs can become e-magazines too.
Import an existing PDF, choose Export to e-magazine, and publish it as an interactive edition with page browsing and reader mode.

A working example

A practical step toward European digital independence

FontPanel treats digital independence as a product requirement: a professional production tool should run on your machine, keep your work under your control, and avoid forcing the whole workflow into someone else's cloud.

The core editor is local-first — documents and assets live in your browser, with an optional, self-hostable backend for the few server features. It builds on open, portable formats (PDF/X, PDF/A, SVG, HTML) and openly licensed components, so your files and your workflow stay yours.

One environment

Everything in one place

FontPanel is more than a layout editor. It combines page layout, rich text, a font vault, image tools, tables, charts, print output and publishing — all in a single browser app.

01 Pages, spreads & workspace

A4, A3, A5, US Letter/Legal or custom sizes; print and web modes; units in px, mm, cm, in, pt and pica with live math in supported measurement fields (e.g. 10mm+2pt); facing pages and spreads, rulers, grids, smart guides, snapping, ghost pages, zoom, pan, context-sensitive top controls and flexible panel docking.

02 Master pages, libraries & presets

Master/template pages, build a template from any selection, reusable object libraries, and save the whole document environment as a .preset — build production environments, not just single documents.

03 The text engine

Rich text with mixed fonts, weights, sizes, color, tracking, leading and baseline shift in a single frame; columns, tabs and leaders, lists, Swedish/English hyphenation and spellcheck, text on a path, threaded frames with overset handling, grapheme-safe left/right movement, and navigation by visual line, column and story.

04 Font Vault

Integrated access to 133 open-licensed Google Fonts families and their available weights and styles; import your own TTF/OTF, synchronize selected folders or mounted volumes, use IndexedDB caching, find missing fonts with substitution previews, inspect embedding policies and diagnose font-loading problems.

05 Images & adjustment

JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP and SVG import with InDesign-style frame/content separation, crop, pan and scale via familiar shortcuts, rounded-corner clipping, and a Camera-Raw-style panel: exposure, contrast, highlights, vibrance, clarity, dehaze, sharpening, vignette and grain.

06 Tables & charts

Editable cell tables with merge/split, per-cell fills and gradients, alignment and table-wide effects; a chart engine for bar, line, area, pie, donut, radar and scatter from CSV/TSV/JSON — every chart exported as a real, editable layout object.

07 Vector & shape tools

Pen and Bézier path editing, boolean operations (union, intersect, exclude, minus), a large shape library, an advanced pattern and contour generator, and an articulated figure/pose builder for placeholders and references.

08 PDF import & reconstruction

Place PDF pages or split them into editable objects; preserve vectors, gradients, masks and clipped or transformed images where safe; retain recoverable source images; and cautiously reconstruct likely multiline text frames or regular multi-column stories when the source permits.

09 Prepress & PDF export

PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b export support with embedded ICC profiles, CMYK with K100 overprint and explicit knockout, on-screen ICC soft-proof, TAC checks and print marks. Profile-aware preflight checks effective image resolution after scaling and cropping and keeps should-fix findings separate from non-blocking quality risks.

10 E-magazine, reading mode & TTS

Export a standalone e-magazine with a page-flip reader, thumbnails, search and fullscreen; an adjustable reading mode; plus optional, bring-your-own-key AI for editorial text extraction and text-to-speech voices.

11 Web, HTML/SVG & SEO

Export responsive HTML/SVG with embedded fonts and no runtime CDN, per-object web geometry, interactive links and form fields, video objects, Open Graph/X Card metadata, theme color, and generated robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

12 QR, barcodes & ad transparency

A QR studio for URLs, text, phone, SMS, email, vCard, Wi-Fi, calendar, location and Swish; EAN, Code-128 and ISBN barcodes; and helpers for political-ad transparency packages.

13 Automation & variable-data production

Turn a layout into a template with {{placeholders}}, bind CSV/TSV/JSON columns, preview the first record, and export a multi-page PDF through the PDF/X-4 print path — entirely locally, with no eval and no network calls.

14 Proofing, packaging & plugins

Automated preflight, in-interface proof sharing and SMTP proof e-mails, project packaging that collects assets and embeddable fonts, plus a local plugin host for importing .fpplugin modules.

15 AI-assisted layout beta

Build a structured brief from a reference PDF, image, ZIP, current page or selection. No API key is required: use the brief with your regular ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini access. Direct generation with your own OpenAI API key is an optional shortcut. Import compatible layout JSON as editable FontPanel objects. Intended for simple single-page layouts.

Boundaries and design choices

FontPanel supports PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b export paths, while final validation claims for a specific release file should be backed by external validator reports. Some choices are deliberate: there is no built-in cloud-storage silo, because the file model prioritizes digital independence through local documents, portable formats and optional self-hosting. Current boundaries include no tagged PDF/UA accessibility export, no spot-color, Pantone or duotone output, no general ICC image conversion, no real-time multi-user collaboration and no native INDD or IDML import. PDFs exported from InDesign can be reconstructed, but fidelity depends on the source. AI-assisted layout is limited to simple single-page jobs and does not promise pixel-perfect reproduction. DOCX export produces an editable document rather than a pixel-perfect prepress file.

Pricing after the beta

Free through July 2027. A low ceiling after that.

FontPanel remains completely free through 31 July 2027. After the beta, the planned personal subscription will cost no more than SEK 30 per month including VAT. The planned business target is about SEK 200 per month excluding VAT.

The personal amount is a price cap—not a temporary launch discount. Complete billing and licence terms will be published before commercial launch.

Personal: maximum SEK 30/month including VAT.

Business: target about SEK 200/month excluding VAT; exact licence scope will be specified before launch.

Free alternatives exist. FontPanel's promise is not to claim “cheapest”, but to keep the path from free beta to paid service transparent and predictable.

FontPanel's original source code and other product-specific expression may not be copied, adapted, distributed or incorporated into another product without written permission, except where applicable law or an identified third-party license permits.

Help make FontPanel better

We can't promise to reply to every message — but we read them gratefully, because they make FontPanel better. We're especially keen to hear your ideas for new features and improvements.

One heads-up: parts of the text engine are still moving quickly, so detailed typography feedback may age fast. Bug reports on everyday editing are still very welcome.
